At the start of the road from Dingshu Village to the nearby city of Yixing, there was a hill. The first clay used there was dug up from the bottom of this hill, and was thus called Jiang Po Ni, translating to "clay that has fallen downhill." The style of clay used in Dingshuzhen is generally called Zisha, meaning “purple sand," though many people, particularly in the west, know it simply as Yixing, named after the larger city nearby.
