In China, the clay from Dingshu Village that is famed throughout the world is known as Zisha, meaning "purple sand," or sometimes as Yixing Zisha.  In the West, this clay is generally referred to as Yixing, named after the city near Dingshu Village.  There is a hill at the start of the road from Dingshu Village to Yixing.  The original source of this clay was at the base of this hill.  Thus, Yixing Zisha from this location is known as Jiang Po Ni, literally translating to "clay that has fallen downhill."

Lychees are particularly auspicious in Chinese culture, as their name is a near homophone for "lucky and beneficial."
