The pixiu is one of China's great mythical creatures. It is a long-bodied, winged, horned cat. It is a symbol of good-fortune, and the length of its body symbolizes longevity, "longevity" in Chinese being a near homophone for its name. Male and female pixiu are generally differentiated by their horns, in that male pixiu are generally depicted with one horn, while females are depicted with two.
