This stunningly beautiful 150ml gaiwan was hand-made in Yixing, home of the famed Zisha clay from which it's made. Unlike most modern Yixing, this piece was wood-fired in the fashion of the old Dragon Kiln, where all Yixing was originally fired. This technique requires greater skill, as the temperature is uneven, which makes the clay far more prone to breakage as the clay contracts and expands. These variations in temperature produce a rougher form of Yixing, with stunningly beautiful color variations ranging from copper to black to teal. The lid and base of this gaiwan are adorned with a lotus design, while its body is adorned with the Heart Sutra.
This piece is one of a kind, and would make an impressive centerpiece in any teaware collection.
